Three Ways To Take A Fresh Look At Your Business Growth

Have you ever been to a restaurant where the location is beautiful, but the food is bland? In contrast, have you ever been to a hole-in-the-wall restaurant where the food is terrific, but the seat cushions have holes in them, the plates are chipped, and the bathrooms are nasty?

It’s interesting, isn’t it, when the appearance and the experience don’t match up?

Maybe that’s why we enjoy watching those television shows where the expert comes into a business, has a frank and unflattering discussion with the business owner about what’s wrong, and we get to see the business makeover by the end of the episode. (Think Tabatha’s Salon Takeover, Bar Rescue, and Small Business Revolution.)

Anyway, the reason we bring this up is that we want to discuss your branding. What do I mean by branding? The basics, like your business logo, your business cards, your signage, your letterhead, your brochures, your video advertisements, your Facebook page.

Does your branding reflect the level of professionalism you want to project to potential customers?

Another way to look at it is this: Is your company’s “look” consistent? Does your company’s “voice” say the same thing across all your marketing channels? Does everyone know — within your company and outside of your company — what your “why” is?

To borrow from a technique seen on Tabatha’s Salon Takeover episode, take a piece of paper and cut a small hole in the center of that sheet. Next, walk around your shop and see any clutter, worn seats, dirty countertops, etc. We suggest doing this because we tend to forget what surrounds us. After all, it has become so normal for us. But with this exercise, you’ll be able to appreciate what a first-time customer sees when they walk through the front door.

Here are some things you want to pay attention to and figure out if they need improvement:

  • Take a look at your marketing material. Are your logos, brochures, and business cards looking dated?
  • Have you made a video for your business? If not, why not? Video marketing is critical if you want to grab the attention of your ideal clients.
  • How does your lobby look? Is it clean? Is it inviting?
  • How are you answering your phones? Are you warm, welcoming, and helping people solve their problems?
  • Ask your clients for feedback. Or, can a business coach or your peer group give you fresh ideas?
  • Are your systems & processes well defined and documented? Documented systems and processes help remove the chaos from your daily to-dos.

To borrow from the Black Eyed Peas in their song, “Boom Boom Pow”…

“Everything around you is changing. Nothing stays the same … I’m so three thousand and eight. You so two thousand and late. I got that boom boom pow!”

Have you got that boom boom pow? Or are you so two thousand and late?
