We Tried 3 Of The Top AI Platforms To Write A Blog: Here’s What We Found Out

The TL;DR of AI blog writing? It’s an incredible tool for your tool belt, but don’t put it on the payroll just yet.

What if I told you that this very blog you’re reading was written with AI? No, I didn’t type “write a blog about writing a blog with AI” into my favorite engine and reap the following paragraphs as a reward. However, I utilized this amazing tool to help craft this blog (which I’ll talk about a bit more below).

Rock Star Marketing has been in the game for over ten years, writing blogs to ensure our clients’ have unique blogs that blow any competition out of the water. Our company has changed and adapted as technology has become more advanced. With the plethora of information, accessibility, and popularity concerning AI writing, our team set off on a mission to use AI and see if we could utilize it to our advantage in our copywriting services and beyond: and the results surprised even us.

Crafting a Blog Post with AI Platforms

AI blog writing

Our team explored a few of the most popular AI platforms (OpenAI, Jasper, and Copy.AI), and each platform had its pros and cons. For those new to AI technology as it pertains to blog writing, the process typically goes like this:

  • Add information. You begin by adding some information about what you’re writing.
  • Command. You command the bot to write a title, subheading, subsection, or paragraph.
  • Edit. You check for inaccuracies, grammar, and other little bits that need editing.
  • Repeat. You start the process again with the next thing you need.

Now, as mentioned above, each platform has its own quirks. Copy.AI provided a quick blog writing feature, which came up with everything from the title to the subheading. Jasper was super successful at listening to commands. And, of course, OpenAI added its revolutionary ChatGPT feature. Each comes at a different price point, too.

Limitations of This Technology

Of course, we learned AI’s limitations first.

AI is not a plug-and-play situation. You cannot plug in a blog topic, blindly copy and paste it into your client’s blog, and go about your day.

At times, the AI bot would provide a lovely paragraph with sound, even expert confidence about a topic. Sometimes, we found that the information within the paragraph (though it sounded really real) ended up being false.

Other times, the bot knew precisely what it was talking about, but the words didn’t sound right. There were grammar errors, or an awkward flow.

Most importantly, the blogs written by AI didn’t give any flair or personality. Each of our clients has a unique story, background, and why. Some of those things just can’t be conveyed with AI technology.

Learning about the ins and outs of our assigned AI bot helped us command it more efficiently and get more of what we wanted more often. A round of editing and fact-checking was not optional–it was necessary to ensure that all the things written by AI were up to our standards.

When we tried to utilize it to write a whole blog, it required us to go back in and add layers of personality. We spent time weaving in all the things that make our Rock Star Marketing blogs so successful (such as story, values, and unique flair) after the fact.

After edits, fact checking, layering, and re-editing, sometimes this process took longer than writing blogs without AI.

How We Pivoted To Make It Work

These limitations were a big deal for a marketing company dedicated to providing unique, relevant, and never cookie-cutter blogs for our clients. But, as all great marketers do, we pivoted! We asked the question: how can we make AI work for us?

Here’s what we found:

  • Being specific with commands is the way to go when using AI.
  • AI is beneficial when coming up with blog topics for our clients, especially if we command for SEO relevant titles.
  • Researching the blog topic beforehand helps you filter out useless information more quickly.
  • AI can create SEO-rich subheadings for said blogs and help guide your writing if you’re stuck.
  • When writer’s block prevents us from moving forward, AI gives us the push we need.

Utilizing AI in this way helped us increase efficiency and even boosted morale!

The Verdict: Writing Blogs With AI Technology

blog tools

The bottom line: AI, as it is now, can be used as an incredible tool for marketing agencies and their clients alike. Emphasis on the word “tool.” As it stands, there are a few things we should be cautious about when using AI. We need to ensure that the output from the machine brings:

  • 100% originality
  • 100% fact
  • 100% of client values and story

Thus far, AI didn’t hit the marks for the above.

AI has helped us cure our writing block at times, brainstorm ideas for subheadings and blog topics, and even supported us in getting a bit quicker overall. However, only about 2% of this blog was written with AI. I mostly utilized this tool to help brainstorm subheadings.

So, is it worth it?

Absolutely! The question isn’t whether or not AI technology is here to stay but how it will advance in the coming years. This technology is going to remain important for years to come, so it’s essential to learn how to use it now. As far as blog writing goes, we’ve found using it as a tool (and hand-crafting our blogs with our client’s story and values in mind) is the way to go.
